Sustainable Practices at Riverfields: Business & Environment

Then and now

From an open expanse of land to a thriving precinct, Riverfields has undergone an impressive transformation in just 12 years. This achievement is a testament to the vision and hard work of those who recognised the area’s potential and brought it to life through meticulous planning and infrastructure development. The difference between photographs taken in 2011 and 2023 is a testament to the progress that has taken place in this remarkable journey.

Allocating funds for engineering services

To date, Riverfields has invested more than R1.2 billion to enhance and upgrade municipal infrastructure and development zones. This investment is reflective of our commitment to create a precinct that is not just economically viable, but also environmentally sustainable. We’re not just in the business of creating buildings; we’re delving deeper into building an ecosystem where people and businesses can flourish alongside nature.

An additional R700 million is in the planning phase, allocated for engineering services such as new roads, sewer lines, water reticulation, and electrical infrastructure in upcoming land development areas within Riverfields. This is a testament to our foresight and commitment to future-proof the precinct, to ensure it remains viable and adaptable in the face of our ever-evolving world.

The City of Ekurhuleni and Riverfields align

We work in close collaboration and coordination with the City of Ekurhuleni to align and integrate planning, infrastructure delivery, urban management and co-investment. Riverfields is working hard to ensure that the development is recognised and endorsed as a city and provincial flagship project in line with the priorities of the Mayor and Premier.

Sustainability and transport within Riverfields

At the heart of our commitment to sustainability is the principle of integrated transport networks. Our road, rail, and air network are not just impressive; they are also thoughtfully designed to reduce carbon emissions. By offering multiple efficient commuting options, we aim to decrease dependence on private vehicles and, in turn, reduce our collective carbon footprint. This commitment to sustainable transport isn’t just good for the environment; it’s also good for business, attracting commuters and businesses to the precinct daily.

Our sustainability efforts don’t stop at infrastructure and transport. We have always believed that economic development should not come at the expense of our environment or our community’s quality of life. Our master-planned community incorporates green spaces and is designed to encourage walking and biking. It’s an invitation to a healthier lifestyle and a more sustainable way of living.

These initiatives aren’t just about making Riverfields a desirable place to live and work; they’re about making a lasting, positive impact on our environment. It’s important to note that we’re not just thinking about our immediate environment. Our long-term plans include incorporating renewable energy sources and implementing waste management systems designed to minimise landfill contribution.

Sustainability and transport within Riverfields

Our dedication to sustainable practices extends beyond our infrastructure and into our community. Our precinct has already generated approximately 160,000 employment opportunities in the construction and operational phases of development. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to creating more jobs, further bolstering the local economy, and reducing economic disparities.

As new businesses set up shop and existing ones expand their operations, a wealth of job opportunities arise, spanning from entry-level roles to high-ranking executive positions. With the precinct’s commitment to sustainable growth and its pivotal role within the Ekurhuleni’s commercial corridor and economic triangle, Riverfields is indeed an oasis of opportunity.

We’re also fostering partnerships with businesses that share our commitment to sustainability. Together, we’re making Riverfields a hub for green enterprises, driving economic growth while championing environmentally responsible practices.

As Riverfields continues to grow, we remain committed to our goal of creating a place where people and businesses can grow without compromising the health of our planet.

Invest in tomorrow at Riverfields, we’re not just building a precinct; we’re building a sustainable future.
